Throughout the human history, thousands of speeches were given around the world. Luckily for us, a big part of those speeches are documented, so we can read the speeches and learn how people reacted to them. Individuals just like you and me, where able to motivate and move thousands to change their lives and sacrifice everything they have.
Can you convince anyone to sacrifice their lives because of your presentations?
These historical speakers led thousands with their speeches without the use of any technology. What you would expect is that with technology, people would be better speakers.
What happened is completely opposite.
People forgot about the old and successful way of giving speeches and dedicated most of their time on what really does not matter; slides. What we need is bring back the old way and put everything in the right perspective.
We need to bring back two old behaviors:
Speakers in the past knew that giving speeches is not easy. Simply, they prepared well for it. I am not talking about writing their speeches, I mean developing long-term skills that directly impact their speech skills:
- Language. Great speakers properly studied their own language. With a rich vocabulary you become a master of expression. They knew the right words to use for delivering their message.
- Mentoring. They had speaking mentors that coached them for sharpening their speaking skills. Accordingly, speakers developed the right skills, practicing properly, learned tricks. All this take place with the support of feedback. In modern-day, this translates into having a private coach to teach you how to present. Yes, this expensive, but if you to become a master, you have to pay the price.
Connect with People
Successful speakers know they only succeed if they connect with their audience. The key word about connecting with anyone is to understand them:
What I really wish is that speaking becomes a common skill that people learn in school and universities. With speaking becoming a common habit, like driving, the whole issue of bad presentations will become an issue of the past.
